General Information 2010 - 2011
The teaching of Economics at the University of Western Ontario has a long history, but the Department as it now exists began to take shape in the mid-1960's. At that time, under the direction of Grant Reuber, the Chair, the Department embarked upon a program of rapid expansion and improvement. Currently, the Department has 35 full-time faculty members.
Western's Economics Department ranked Number 1 in research output in Canada over 1977-1997 according to an article by Kocher and Sutter in the June 2001 issue of the Economic Journal. Fully one percent of all impact-weighted articles published in the top 15 economics journals worldwide in this period were written by members of our Department.
The Department stresses the unity of teaching and research as equally important aspects of scholarship. Most of the major areas of economics are covered at both the graduate and undergraduate level. Both programs are based upon a core of micro/macroeconomic analysis and econometrics.
The Department is especially proud of its Honors and Graduate programs. The Honors program has high entrance requirements and demanding standards. Some of North America's leading economists are graduates of this program. We believe that it provides the best undergraduate education in economics available in Canada today.
Our M.A. and Ph.D. programs attract students from Canada and around the world. Currently, there are 45 full-time graduate students in economics. Graduates from these programs can be found in university economics departments throughout Canada and the United States as well as in top government departments and international organizations.
