Registration
This section describes when you are expected to be in the Department and what you should expect when you get here.

The summer review will begin on August 23, 2010. Regular classes begin September 13, 2010.
Where
You are required to check in at the Department of Economics (Room 4074 Social Science Centre) before August 23. Registration packages will be available there. You should bring two official transcripts showing that the required conditions of admission have been met and that the degree has been granted (if these are available, and if you have not already mailed these in earlier).
MA Program
Program ‘B’
Program B is intended for those students who plan on continuing into the Ph.D. program once they have completed the MA and who already have accumulated extensive background skills in macroeconomics, microeconomics, econometrics and mathematics. For students who have completed Program B, admission to the Ph.D. program is automatic, provided they have obtained an overall average of 78 in the M.A. program with no grade below 60. Students must sit for the comprehensive exams in the summer term immediately following the Master’s program. If successful, they can proceed into the Ph.D. program. Students following this route may complete the Ph.D. in three years following the MA.

INFORMATION FOR ALL INCOMING STUDENTS
Regular Classes
Classes begin on September 13, 2010 and end on December 8, 2010. Fall term exams are December 10-21. Classes begin again on January 3, 2011 for the Winter term and end April 7, 2011. Final exams for the Winter term are April 10-30, 2011. Conference week is February 21-25, 2011 in which no classes are scheduled.
Tuition
If you are receiving a Western Graduate Student Scholarship (WGRS), it will be credited to your tuition fee account. Currently tuition and ancillary fees for Canadian students holding a WGRS award is $2756.97 per term. For international students holding a WGRS award tuition and ancillary fees is $5546.31 per term. Health Dental plan fees provide coverage from September 2010 through August 2011 and are collected from graduate students registered in September. If your first installment of WGRS funding completely covers the tuition, then you do not need to do anything further. Your tuition will be paid automatically. If not, please arrange to have the balance paid by the due date on your fee bill. A late fee of approximately $125 will be charged after this date.
Teaching Assistantships and Living Expenses
If you are receiving a Teaching Assistantship (GTA), you will be paid in 8 equal monthly instalments of about $1100 each, with the first pay cheque on Wednesday, September 29th. Therefore, you should have enough money with you for housing and other living expenses for the month of September. Teaching Assistantship assignments will be announced in September after your arrival.
The university is required to withhold a portion of your GTA for income tax. You can reduce the amount withheld by completing a TD1 form. These forms will be available in the Graduate Office at the time of registration.
Accommodation
If you have not already arranged for accommodation, it is best that you make a trip to London in the summer to rent a place for the coming year. If this is not possible, you should arrive as early as possible (before August 23) to look for accommodation. Check the off-campus housing service at http://www.uwo.ca/hfs/housing/index.htm. Rent for a one-bedroom, unfurnished apartment is about $400 - $475; a furnished room with kitchen privileges in a private home should be a little cheaper, $350-$400. Also, the City of London’s web page has information and maps that can assist you.
(Very) Temporary Accommodation
Accommodation is available in Elgin Hall (a University residence) at $45.00 (economy rate – no breakfast, no cleaning) plus 10% taxes a night or $260.00 (economy rate) plus 10% taxes per week all summer until August 28, 2010. For reservations fill out the on-line application form at http://www.has.uwo.ca/hospitality/bedandbreakfast/index.htm.
Party
The annual Department Fall Party is held early in the term, on Thursday, September 23. All graduate students, faculty, staff, and spouses and/or friends are invited. The party is a good opportunity to meet your classmates and get acquainted with Faculty.

Information for Visa Students
In order to help in your efforts to get to Canada to begin your studies at U.W.O., we have found the following information to be quite useful.
- If possible, it is best to book your flight directly to London, Ontario, Canada.
Otherwise, Toronto, Ontario is the closest airport to London. If you arrive in
Toronto, you can take the "Robert Q Airbus" (519) 673-6804, from the Toronto
Airport to London. See schedule for departure and arrival times.
http://www.robertq.com/airbus
The cost is approximately $55.00 (Canadian) per person.
- If your flight is direct to London, you can take a taxi from the London Airport
to the University. The cost is approximately $25.00.
- If you arrive on a weekend, the University administration offices are closed on
Saturdays and Sundays. The Economics Department Office opens Monday at 8:30 am.
The accommodation at Elgin Hall, as mentioned, would be the best choice as they
are on campus and open 24 hours.
- If you have been awarded a Graduate Teaching Assistantship, you must apply
for a Social Insurance Number immediately upon your arrival to London. To
obtain a number, (normally takes about 6 weeks) go to Service Canada, 457
Richmond Street, P.O. Box 5711, London, Ontario N6A 4S7 (1-800-206-7218).
