Good Friday and Easter Monday - Office Hours

The Department of Economics will be closed on Friday, April 2, 2010. Regular office hours will resume on Monday, April 5, 2010.

Yvonne Adams Disco-Ball Award

disco ballBetsy Caucutt and Todd Stinebrickner are pleased to announce that Jacob Cosman has been awarded the inaugural Yvonne Adams Disco-Ball Award for best 591/691 presentation.

Please join us in congratulating Jacob on the receipt of this very prestigious award.

In addition, we are pleased to announce that an anonymous donor has recently come forward to create an endowment which will fund the yearly purchase of the Yvonne Adams Disco-Ball trophy in perpetuity. It is only fitting to have an annual award named after such a key contributor to our graduate program, and we thank this donor for making this possible through his/her generosity.

Canada Research Chairs (CRC) Speaker Series - Dean's Office Invitation

As part of the CRC Speaker Series in the Faculty of Social Science, Lance Lochner, Canadian Research Chair in Human Capital and Productivity, will speak on "Post-Secondary Education in Canada and the US: Returns, Costs, and Financial Aid Policy" on April 6th at 4:00 pm in Room 9420 SSC. A reception will follow.

Spring Convocation - Volunteers Needed

Social Science convocation dates are Wednesday, June 16 at 10 am (Honors, 4-year (excluding BMOS), Diplomas and Certificates (excluding Accounting)) and Thursday, June 17 at 10:00 am (BMOS programs, 3-year BA, BA (ACS), Diploma in Accounting).

Volunteers are required for the following positions:

  • 6 Hooders: should be members of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, as well as members of the graduating Faculty and may be full-time or part-time faculty members
  • 2 Assistant Marshalls: may be full-time or part-time faculty members
  • 3 Orators: may be full-time or part-time faculty members and should be reasonably well known to the members of the graduating class. Orators should have a clear, strong, confident speaking voice that will be understood by members of the audience
  • 16 Ushers: may be members of either faculty or staff

Hooders, Assistant Marshals, and Orators must be available for duties commencing at 8:45 a.m. in the Thames Hall gym on the day of their duty. Ushers must be available at 8:00 a.m. in the front foyer of Alumni Hall.

Volunteers should let Jennifer Chambers or Jeremy know as soon as possible what s/he is volunteering to do.

Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Association Awards - Call for Nominations

Each year OCUFA recognizes outstanding teachers and academic librarians in Ontario universities through awards. OCUFA Teaching Awards recognize all levels of instruction including graduate, undergraduate, continuing education, faculty development as well as proficiency in teaching that may extend beyond the classroom, the laboratory or the faculty member's office. Activities such as course design, curriculum development, organization of teaching programs, and other significant forms of leadership are often important contributions to the instructional process. Those who excel in any of these are eligible for the OCUFA Teaching Awards. The deadline for receipt of nominations is May 7, 2010.

CEEL Program in Adaptive Economic Dynamics - 11th Trento Summer School

The Computable and Experimental Economics Laboratory (CEEL) program in Adaptive Economic Dynamics will offer the 11th Trento Summer School: Intensive Course in Macroeconomics and Financial Crises, July 11-23, 2010 at Sardagna Trento, Italy. The Trento Summer Schools are intended for advanced graduate students and post-doctoral scholars. The deadline for applications is May 10, 2010.
