Spring Departmental Meeting Minutes

T. Merritt Brown Thesis Prize

Congratulations are extended to Javier Cano Urbina, currently Assistant Professor at Florida State University, who has been awarded the T.Merritt Brown Thesis Prize for 2012. If you would like to send along your congratulations, he can be reached at jcanourbina@fsu.edu.

Summer Paper Prize

The 2012 Summer Paper Prize has been awarded to Peter Foltin. This prize is awarded to the graduate student who, at the end of their second year, produces the best research paper during the summer term. Winners are chosen by the Graduate Awards Committee amongst those nominated by their advisors. Congratulations Peter!

Graduate Teaching Awards

Tim Conley was nominated by the graduate students as Graduate Professor of the Year. He will be presented with a commemorative plaque. Congratulations Tim!


Wenya Wang
was selected as the 2012-2013 Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) of the Year. She will be awarded a prize of $200 and will receive a commemorative plaque. Congratulations Wenya!

Nick Kahnert, Diego Salazar and Max Tabord-Meehan were selected as Tutorial Leaders of the Year by the first year class. Each will be awarded a prize of $100 and all will receive commemorative plaques. Congratulations Nick, Diego and Max!

Undergraduate Teaching Awards

Jim MacGee was nominated by the undergraduate students as Undergraduate Professor of the Year. He will be presented with a commemorative plaque. Congratulations Jim!

University Students' Council - Teaching Honour Roll Certificate

Congratulations to Jim MacGee, David Rivers, Youngki Shin and John Whalley on receiving a USC Teaching Honour Roll Certificate for the 2011-2012 academic year. This award is given to instructors who receive an accumulated average of 6.3 or higher out of 7 on the first 14 questions of the Western Senate-mandated course and teacher evaluations.

Spring Convocation - Volunteers Needed

Social Science convocation dates, involving Economics graduates, are Tuesday, June 11 at 10:00 a.m. (School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, Faculty of Social Science BA Honors, BSc Honors, Diplomas and Certificates) and Wednesday, June 12 at 3:00 p.m. (Faculty of Social Science 3yr and 4yr excluding Honors and BMOS, Faculty of Science 3yr and 4yr excluding Honors).

Volunteers are required for the following positions:

  • Hooders: members of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, as well as members of the graduating Faculty and may be full-time or part-time faculty members
  • Orators: may be full-time or part-time faculty members and should have a clear, strong, confident speaking voice that will be understood by members of the audience
  • Assistant Marshalls: may be full-time or part-time faculty members
  • Ushers: may be faculty or staff or graduate students

Hooders, Assistant Marshals, and Orators must be available for duties commencing at 8:45 a.m. or 1:45 p.m. on the day of their duty in the Thames Hall gym. Ushers must be available at 8:00 a.m. or at 1:00 p.m. on the day of their duty in the front foyer of Alumni Hall.

Teaching Support Centre - Upcoming Events

The Spring Perspectives on Teaching Conference, sponsored by the Teaching Support Centre, will take place on May 14, 2013, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Room SSC 2050. Registration is free, but please register in advance online and indicate the session(s) you plan to attend.

The Teaching Support Centre will offer an intensive three-day Instructional Skills Workshop for Faculty (ISW), on May 7-9, 2013 in the Teaching Support Centre, Room 122, The D.B. Weldon Library. Participants are required to attend the full three days. This program is open to all full and part-time faculty. Enrollment is limited, please register online.


Research Notices

Please submit a hard copy (pdf copy by email) of all research grant applications (including contracts), internal and external, to Karin for review and subsequent Chair approval/signature prior to electronically submitting your applications.

In addition, completion and electronic submission of a Proposal via ROLA must be filled out be all applicants to obtain institutional approvals for their research grant/contract applications. Please see Karin if  you need assistance.
