3. Textbook List

The list of textbooks for Economics courses will no longer be posted here. Please visit Western's Bookstore website.

4. Special Topics

The Department is not able to offer many special topics courses in a given academic year. Please consult the timetable to see what courses are offered by the Department on main campus. It’s possible a special topics course is only offered at an Affiliated College so you will need to contact that College for more information.

5. Tests and Exams

Rooms for Final Exams

This information is available online at the Registrar's Office as well as on bulletin boards around campus.

Rooms for Midterm Tests

Rooms for out-of-class tests are either posted on the course website or in the glass case on the fourth floor of the Social Science Building in the Department of Economics. We make every effort to ensure the accuracy of this information, but it is the student's responsibility to make sure he/she knows exactly where the test is being written.

NOTE: Please make sure you write your test/exam in the correct room at the correct time. Failure to do so may be considered cheating and may result in a zero grade.

6. Plagiarism and Essay Writing

The University of Western Ontario has strict guidelines about plagiarism and other scholastic offences. For example, in order to pass an essay course the student must exhibit some minimal level of competence in essay writing and the appropriate level of knowledge of the content of the course. Further, you must demonstrate the ability to write clearly and correctly. Work presented in English in any subject which shows a lack of proficiency in English and is unacceptable for academic credit, will either be failed or, at the discretion of the instructor, returned to the student for revision to a literate level. All instructors in the Department of Economics take proficiency in English into account when assigning grades.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, plagiarism is defined as taking and using another person’s thoughts and writings as one’s own. If you use results that other researchers have derived or ideas they have expressed in their work, you must acknowledge the contributions of these authors. Therefore, to avoid plagiarism, the Department has adopted the guidelines used in the Chicago Manual of Style.

The University of Western Ontario uses software for plagiarism checking. You may be required to submit your written work in electronic form for plagiarism checking.

7. Essay Prizes

Thanks to Economics' Alumni and our Departmental Endowment Fund, we are able to award essay prizes valued at $200 each. The following criteria will be used to award the prizes:

  • Students can only win the prize once.
  • Two prizes may be awarded in each term—one for a general student and one for an honors student. Economics 4400E is not eligible for this as it has its own paper prize.
  • Instructors will nominate students for the prize. The paper should be submitted to the Undergraduate Coordinator for consideration by the Essay Prize Committee, which will decide the winner. The deadline for submissions will be announced at the beginning of each term.
  • The Essay Prize Committee will consist of the Undergraduate Director, WUER Faculty Advisor and one other faculty member. The decision of the Committee is final and cannot be appealed.
  • Papers will be judged on content, originality, use of references, spelling and grammar.

The grade given to the paper will not influence the decision of the Essay Prize Committee as all comments by the original marker will be removed.

The winner of the essay prize will have his/her paper submitted in the Spring to the Western Undergraduate Economic Review. Other appropriate papers may also be submitted.
