General Information - Department of Economics

Western Economics ranks among the top economics departments in Canada, and has an international reputation for excellence in both teaching and research. Our distinguished history was initiated by Mark K. Inman in the late 1930s. In the 1960s, Western Economics was transformed into a research-intensive department under the leadership of Grant L. Reuber.

Today, there are approximately 30 full-time research active, award winning faculty members representing all areas of economics. Western Economics is host to numerous international post-doctoral fellows and visitors. Western contributes to public policy debates and training through our Institutes and Centres.

Undergraduate Programs

Western Economics offers a variety of Undergraduate Programs. Students can complete a Honors Specialization degree in three different areas: Economics, Global Economics, and Economics, Politics and Philosophy. Students also have the option to complete a Major in Economics or in Financial Economics, or a Minor in Economics. Students interested in a joint degree can complete both a BA in Honors Business Administration (HBA) with the Ivey School of Business and a BA (Honors) in Economics within five years. Graduates of these programs have gone on to become leading economists working in the public and private sector.

Graduate

The cornerstone of our Department’s educational focus is our Graduate P rogram. Our M.A. and Ph.D. programs attract students from around the world. Graduates from these programs can be found in universities throughout the world as well as in top government departments, international organizations, public and private firms.

In 2013, we introduced our new interdisciplinary Master in Financial Economics Program. This exciting program is a joint initiative with the Ivey Business School, the Faculty of Law, and the Department of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences. Graduates are equipped with analytical and quantitative skills to succeed in the highly competitive and rapidly evolving financial marketplace.
