General Information
- Important Dates for Fall 2025 Admission:
- The application process opens on October 16, 2024
- The application process closes on January 31, 2025
- Applications submitted after January 31, 2025 will not be considered
- Degree Requirements:
- Applicants must possess a four-year undergraduate degree from an accredited university in one of the following areas:
- Economics
- Finance or Business Administration (with intermediate or advanced courses in macroeconomics, microeconomics, and econometrics, or comparable alternative courses)
- A quantitative discipline (i.e., mathematics, statistics, actuarial science, etc.)
- A general degree (with intermediate or advanced courses in mathematics, macroeconomics, microeconomics, and econometrics, or comparable alternative courses)
- Candidates with a 3-year general degree are not eligible
- Applicants must possess a four-year undergraduate degree from an accredited university in one of the following areas:
- GPA:
- A minimum GPA of 3.14 (78.5%) in the last two full-time years of the undergraduate degree
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test:
- GRE scores are required for applicants not graduating from an accredited Canadian University
- English Language Requirements:
- Applicants must have at least one of the following:
- English as a first language
- English Proficiency Scores approved by University
- At least two years of full-time study in an academic degree program in a country whose principal language is English

- Admission to the MFE Program is highly competitive. Satisfying the minimum requirements will not guarantee admission to the program.
- The application fee is $150.00
- We do not pre-screen applicants
- Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews
How to Apply
- Go to the application portal: Western's online Graduate Program Application Portal.
- All documents supporting your application must be uploaded electronically (in PDF format) to the online application portal. DO NOT submit any paper documents.
- The Admissions Committee will only review applications within the application portal, so all information must be included in your online application.

Transcripts & Academic Records
- Official transcripts are required from all post-secondary institutions attended (whether a degree was conferred or not).
- Past or current Western University students do not need to provide transcripts for their academic history at Western.
- Candidates who apply before the end of the Fall semester (first academic term), should update their applications as soon as the grades for the Fall semester appear on their transcripts.
- If your transcript or degree certificate is not in English, a certified translation must also be included. Non-English transcripts from certified Canadian educational institutions are exempted from this requirement.
Course History Details
- Please provide a list of Econometrics, Coding, Mathematics and Statistics university courses you have taken in the last 4 years. For second- and upper-year courses, please provide the title and author(s) of the main text used.
Academic References
- Two references are required and at least one must be an academic reference.
- After the applicant enters the details for each referee in the application portal, a request is emailed to each one asking them to submit their references online.
- Paper references are not accepted.
- You will be notified by email when the request is sent to your referee and notified again when the reference is completed.
Supplementary Questions
- The application process includes additional questions that allow you to discuss your professional, extracurricular activities and other interests.
- Please use this PDF fillable form to provide your responses to the supplementary questions and upload your completed form to the application portal.
Proficiency in English Scores
Applicants must have at least one of the following:
- English as their first learned language
- English Proficiency Scores (see below)
- At least two years of full-time study in an academic degree program in a country whose principal language is English.
- Minimum acceptable score is :
- 550 for paper-based examinations
- 213 for computer-based examinations
- 86 for internet-based examinations ( with no individual score below 2 0 )
- Western's TOEFL ID is 0984
- Minimum acceptable score is 6 .5 /9
- TOEFL or IELTS scores that are more than two years old will not be accepted.
- Applicants must make their own arrangements to write the TOEFL or IELTS, and to have the official results sent directly to the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies by the testing agency.
- M inimum acceptable score is 115
- M inimum acceptable score is 60
- Proof of successful completion of the High-Advanced level
- Graduation from Level 10 with a minimum 80% in all components
GRE Scores
- GRE scores are required for applicants not graduating from an accredited Canadian University.
- However, all applicants are encouraged to submit GRE scores, particularly if their academic records do not reflect their potential.
- The MFE program does not typically accept students with GRE scores below 150 (new scale) on the Quantitative component .
- Western’s Institution Code is 0984 and the Department Code is 1801. GRE scores need to be submitted to the university before the application deadline.
Resume
- Provide a professionally formatted resume highlighting your work and extracurricular experiences, technical skills and academic background.
- P rior professional work experience is not an admission requirement.
Application Fee
- The application fee is $150.00.
- Western accepts payment by credit card (Visa/MasterCard) or cheque/money order. If paying online by credit card, ensure your browser's pop-up blocker is disabled.
Application Assessment
Accessing Your Application in Student Center
- Please retain your Western email login credentials, application number and Western student ID#.
- You may modify your application, including uploading documents, up until you click 'submit'.
- If you have a revision to make after submitting your application, please send your inquiry to the MFE Program at mfe@uwo.ca indicating your application number and student ID# in the body of your message.
As an applicant, the Western Student Center will allow you to:
- Update personal information (including contact information)
- Check your application status
- Explore the Western course catalog
- Accept an offer of admission
Preliminary Assessment
- Once Western receives your completed application and payment, an automated email will be sent to you confirming receipt of the completed application.
- The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies will complete a preliminary assessment of your application to calculate an admission average, establish an academic degree basis for your potential admission and determine any additional documentation required by Western should you receive an offer of admission.
- After your application passes through the preliminary assessment phase, an email will be sent to you confirming receipt of your application to the program to which you applied.
Application Review
- No application will be considered until it is complete.
- Although you apply through one central graduate application at Western, ultimately your application is collected and assessed by the MFE Admissions Committee.
- The responsibility rests with the applicant to ensure their application is complete and submitted by the application deadline.
- All applications will be considered after the deadline, not before.
- The review process takes four to six weeks. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted on a rolling basis to schedule an interview.
Admission Decisions
- The admission review process takes four to six weeks following the application deadline.
- Only s hortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews.
- All candidates will receive an email notification of the Admission Committee's final decision. If there is a change in your status, you will be contacted via email by the MFE Program staff. You may login to Student Center to view your status at any time.
- Applicants who have been offered admission to the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies can accept or decline their offers of admission online through the Western Student Center .
- Log in to Western Student Center with your Western Personal Computer Account credentials and locate the Admissions grid. Select "Accept or Decline" to begin the decision process.
