Joel Fried

It is with great sadness that the Department of Economics announces that Joel Fried passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 25th after a lengthy and courageous battle with lung cancer. Our sympathy and condolences go to his wife, Linda, and their children, Judith and Ben.

Joel will be sorely missed by colleagues and staff in the Economics Department and in the broader University community, as well as by many former colleagues, students and friends.

Joel played a pivotal role in the intellectual life of the Department throughout a career that began here at Western in 1968. He was an engaging colleague and teacher, always passionate and persuasive about economics and its role in helping to understand everyday life. Beyond his impact within the Department, Joel contributed immensely to the University in his role as a member of the Joint Pension Board for over 15 years.
